Madame Ristell, whose real name was Anne Loman, was a prominent figure in the nineteenth century United States. She was known for providing illegal abortion services. She was born in England in eighteen twelve and later emigrated to the United States. In New York City, she established herself as a self proclaimed female physician and midwife.

0:31 During the nineteenth century, abortion was illegal in the United States, but it was not uncommon for women to seek such services due to limited access to contraception and the social stigma surrounding unwed pregnancies. Madame Ristell took advantage of this demand. She operated a highly profitable business offering secret abortions to women from all social classes. Her methods of inducing abortions were dangerous and often involved the use of talkic distances, including arsenic laced pills. She marketed these pills as preventative powders, or female pills that would regulate a woman's menstrual cycle.

1:08 In reality, these pills contained toxic substances like arsenic and other harmful compounds that could cause serious health complications, including death. Madame Ristell became infamous for her controversial business practices and the disregard she had for the lives and the well being of the women who sought her services. She faced numerous arrests and legal challenges throughout her career, but her wealth and her connections allowed her to evade serious consequence. One of the most high profile cases involving Madame Rossell was the death of a young woman named Maria Purdy in eighteen thirty six.

The resulting scandal in public outcry didn't leave to Ristell's conviction, but it brought attention to her activities and further fuel the ongoing debate over abortion laws. Despite facing repeated arrests in public protests from anti abortion activists, Madame Mistell continued her operations for several decades. She was known to change her name and location frequently to avoid detection. In the mid nineteenth century, she faced a renewed wave of opposition from the American Medical Association, which sought to expose and shut down her business.

2:22 In February of eighteen seventy eight, while under investigation, Madame Ristelle was found dead in her New York City apartment, having apparently taken her own life by jesting prussic acid, which is actually cyanide. Her death marked the end of a controversial career, but the debate over abortion in women's reproductive rights persisted and continues to be a contentious issue to this day. Madame Ristelle's stories served as a reminder of the desperate measures women resorted to in a time when reproductive choices were severely restricted, and the dangers they faced in seeking unsafe and illegal procedures.
