Irish Travelers: Tales of Tinkers, Fairies, and Hidden Treasures

0:04 Welcome to the Strange History podcast, where we talk about the weird and the wonderful and sometimes not so wonderful history that has shaped our world into who we are today. Today, we're going to delve down the Ireland path. We're going to talk about Irish Travelers, also known as Povey's or Monsiers. They're an ethnic group indigenous to Ireland. They have a distinct culture, and they're traditionally nomadic, living in caravans or mobile homes and moving from place to place. While they're often referred to as travelers, it's important to note that this term is actually derogatory and it's generally more respectful to use their preferred terms, such as Irish Travelers or Pavey's.

0:46 In Ireland, nearly everybody is aware of the existence of the Irish Travelers. They're one of Ireland's most oldest and marginalized minority groups, known for their nomadic lifestyle, distinct dialects, and oftable traditions. I personally had not heard of this group until the day I researched this podcast and put it together. It's a request from a listener, Courtney, who has her own podcast called Nefarious Nightmares. Checked them out, but she requested this, so here we are today. Irish travelers have a long history in Ireland, dating back several centuries.

1:20 They have their own language, known as Shelter or Kent. It's a mix of Irish, Gaelic and English, with their unique vocabulary and grammar. However, the majority of Irish travelers today primarily speak English. Traditionally, Irish travelers were involved in occupations such as tinsmith and horse trading and seasonal agricultural work. They live a nomadic lifestyle, moving from town to town and offered their services and goods. Today, while some Irish travelers still maintain this lifestyle, others have settled in a more permanent location and have diversified their occupations.

1:55 Irish travelers have faced significant challenges and discrimination throughout history, including issues related to education, employment and housing. They have often been stigmatized and subjected to stereotypes and negative portrayals. Efforts have been made to address these issues and promote inclusivity and equality for Irish travelers in Ireland. Irish travelers live in Ireland and throughout Great Britain and other small communities in Canada the United States. They've lived as a distinct ethnic group with their own culture, language and values, distinguished from settled Irish communities for centuries.

2:31 Let's talk a little bit about their language, culture and society. Like we said before, Irish travelers speak English as well as their own language, known as Can't Gammon or Shelta. Can't is influenced by Irish and Hiberno English and remains largely unwritten language interesting. According to the two and sixteen Centses, there was nearly thirty one thousand Irish travelers living in the Republic of Ireland, representing points seven percent of the population. Historically associated with rural Ireland, travelers today live mainly in cities, majority living in Dublin and surrounding suburbs, followed by Galway and Cork.

3:13 Overwhelmingly Roman Catholic, Irish travelers tend to be devout, with strong beliefs in traditional folk healing practices. They also tend to marry younger and have larger families. More than twenty five percent of Irish traveler households have six or more persons, compared to about five percent in the general population, and travelers have nearly tripled the amount of multiple family households. Large loyal family networks are of major importance in Irish traveler communities, providing support and protection against social exclusion and anti traveler discrimination.

3:46 Irish travelers are sometimes mistakenly called Gypsies, they have no genetic relationship with the Roman people. In Ireland, Irish travelers were also commonly known as tinkers, derived from the sound their tools make from hitting metal, when many travelers worked as tinsmiths. Both gypsies and tinkers are considered derogatory terms today. The origin of Irish travelers is actually unknown, although nomadism existed in Gaelic culture and Ireland for centuries before the English conquest. Genetic studies in two and seventeen revealed that travelers are descended from the same ancestors as the settled Irish population, but two populations split approximately twelve generations or three hundred and sixty years ago, leading to some genetic differences.

4:33 These findings disprobe a long held myth that travelers originated during the Great Famine in the eighteen forties, when many people were displaced from their homes. The famine theory was perpetuated into the twenty first century in order to try to force Irish travelers to settle and assimulate. It's important to approach discussion about Irish travelers with sensitivity and respect. Irish travelers have a rich or tradition of storytelling in folklore is an integral part their culture. Let's listen to this story.

5:05 It's one of their stories and it's part of their rich culture. The Wanderer's Dream. Once upon a time in a small Irish village there lived a young Irish traveler boy named Liam. Liam had always been captivated by the stories of his ancestors travels, and dreams of embarking on his own great adventure. One night, Liam had a vivid dream. In his dream, he saw a magnificent land beyond the horizon, the place where dreams come true. The vision was so vivid that Liam woke up with a new found determination to find this mythical land.

5:39 Without wasting a moment, Liam prepared for his journey. He packed his meager belongings and set off into the unknown, guided only by the flickering stars in the night sky. As Liam traveled throughout the rolling hills and dense forests, he encountered various challenges. He faced treacherous rivers, overcame towering cliffs, braved stormy weather, but with every hurdle he surpassed, his determination grew stronger. Along his way, Liam met kind hearted strangers who offered him shelter and shared their wisdom.

He discovered an ancient book filled with the illustrations of mythical creatures and magical landscapes. The book spoke of a guardian who held the key to the land of dreams.

Finally, after a long and arduous journey, Liam stood before the Guardian, a wise and ancient figure. The Guardian recognized the determination in Liam's eyes and revealed the secret. Entering the Land of the Dreams, Liam closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and stepped through a shimmering portal. As he crossed the threshold, he found himself in a breathtaking world, filled with vibrant colors, floating islands, and whimsical creatures.

7:19 It was the land he had seen in his dream, the place where dreams come true. In this wondrous land, Liam met fellow dreamers who shared their tales of triumph and accomplishment. They encouraged one another to chase their dreams fearlessly, knowing that anything was possible. In time, Liam realized that the true power of the Land of Dreams lay not in the magical surroundings, but within the hearts of those who dared to believe in themselves. He understood the journey itself. It transformed him, teaching him valuable lessons of perseverance, courage, and the indominal spirit of the Irish traveler.

Once upon a time and a quaint Irish village there lived a young Irish traveler girl named Saban Sioban possessed a remarkable gift. She was an extraordinary dancer. Her graceful movements, rhythmatic steps, and radiant energy and enchanted everyone who saw her perform. Siobon's dancing seemed to ignite a magical flame within her. It flickered and danced in time with her steps, casting a mesmerizing glow around her. Word of Sea Bond's incredible talent spread far and wide, reaching the ears of mischievous fairies who resided in the nearby woods.

9:08 Intrigued by Seobon's gift, the fairy folk decided to put her abilities to the test. They approached Seabon one moonlit evening when she was dancing by a babbling brook, lost in her own world of music and movement. The leader of the fairies, a mischievous bright named Puck, challenged Siobon to a dance off. Puck claimed that a sea Bon could outdance him, she would earn a reward that would bring joy and prosperity to her family and the entire traveler community. Siobon filled with determination and a touch of excitement except the challenge.

9:41 The stage was set by an enchanting clearing in the heart of the woods, surrounded by ancient trees and illuminated by the soft glow of fireflies. As sea Bon and Puck took their positions, the woodland creatures gathered, eager to witness the magical dance off. The air crackled with anticipation in the seemed to hold its bread. Seubon's dancing was ethereal, every movement infused with passion and grace. She twirled, leaped, and spun her feet, barely touching the ground. The magical flame within her burned brighter, casting a radiant light that eliminated the entire clearing.

10:17 Puck not to be outdone, matched Seabon's every move with his own agile steps. He hopped, he skipped, and pirouetted with the finesse of a seasoned dancer. But despite his best efforts, Siabon's performance surpassed even as wildest expectations. As the dance off reached its climax, Siabon's dancing became a symphony of light and movement. The magical flames soared higher into the sky, illuminating the forest and casting a spellbinding spell over everyone who watched. The woodland creatures, fairies, and even the ancient trees joined in the celebration, swaying to the rhythm of Seabon's dance.

Once upon a time in the lush landscapes of Ireland, there lived a brother and a sister duo named Connell and Bridget. They were Irish travelers known for their wanderlust and love for adventure. From a young age, Conall and Bridget listened intently to the stories of their ancestors travels. Their hearts swelled with curiosity and a burning desire to explore the world. Beyond their small village. One day, their longing for adventure grew so strong they made a pack to embark on a grand journey.

Connell and Bridget approached it with awe intrepidation.

Filled with gratitude, Conall and Bridget emerged from the caverns, carrying the Moonstone's magic within them.
